Chapter Thirty-Nine

Erin and I sat quietly as we waited for Allison and Susan to arrive. We dipped our plastic straws deep into our water glasses and watched them pop back up. My mind floated between Eric Foster and Kristin Newsome.

I couldn’t shake the sight of Eric leaving alone last night. Where did he go? Could he have been the man named David that Kristin escaped from? Camille certainly gave me enough reason to suspect her husband.

“Neiman Marcus shoes, who buys these things?” Erin scrolled on her phone, searching for the dress shoes King said Kristin described as David’s. “Almost $2,000.” She swept her gaze up and looked at me. “That’s one grand for each shoe.”

It was the kind of money I could only dream of having—the kind of money I knew Eric Foster had. “People with more money than they know what to do with, I guess.”

“What kind of shoes was Eric wearing last night?”

I shrugged and glanced to the front entrance, anticipating the girls’ arrival. “I wish I’d paid closer attention.”

Erin said, “I like him.”

“Who?” My brows knitted.

“Alex King,” she sang.

“Really?” I thought about the way Alex was acting. He wasn’t himself. His charm drowned out by this emotional investigation. “He can be a lot friendlier than he was today.”

“I think he likes you.”

I laughed. “And you’re basing that off of what exactly? The conversation about Kristin?”

“Have you two ever dated?”

Erin still gripped her phone between both hands. I could tell she wasn’t going to let this go. “It’s complicated.”

I glanced back to the entrance with one knee bouncing. King left the coffee shop promising to call me and, though I looked forward to it, I wasn’t going to fool myself into believing it was anything other than business.

There was a burger joint across the street from where we’d left King, and Erin offered to buy me lunch. I couldn’t refuse but if Susan and Allison didn’t get here quick, I would come to regret it. Especially if Erin kept pressing me for more information about why I wasn’t dating Alex King.

I rolled my head back to Erin. “What about you, is there a man in your life?”

Erin barked out a laugh. “Honey, I’m months away from turning forty. There aren’t too many men glancing in my direction.”

My gaze fell over her soft features. “I don’t believe that. Look at you, you’re gorgeous.”

“I’ve chosen to marry my work.” The crown of Erin’s skull pulled to the ceiling.

“And so have I.” My eyes flicked back to the front.

“Not saying that if the right man came along I wouldn’t make room for him, because I certainly would.” Erin closed her lips around her straw. “And you should, too.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“Nothing.”

“Really? Because it sounds like you are.”

“Alex would look good on you. That’s all I’m saying.”

“Noted. Now, can we please move on?” I looked down to my wedding band. I still couldn’t take it off. Gavin may have been gone for years, but he was still my one love. I wasn’t ready to share all of that with Erin, though, and thankfully she didn’t ask.
